Drawing from each artist’s extensive work in installation and music composition, the live audio/video performances of Elise Baldwin and Kadet Kuhne create unique cinematic experiences through the application of real-time compositional techniques. With an interest in the transmitted electronic signal (via sensors, circuitry and neurons), Kuhne uses the medium to explore themes of communication, control and confinement in her works “Fight or Flight” and “Infinite Delay”. Equally engaged with innovative technology, Elise Baldwin’s works — Theatre of Plants and The Body Farm — consider the relationships between the natural world and the evolution of technology and themes of collective memory and history. Also screening: And the Sun Flowers by Mary Helena Clark and Paradise Falls, New Mexico by Christina Battle. (Steve Polta)

Overlap Salon, San Francisco – Dia de los Maxos

On 28 October, Overlap.org’s series of Max/MSP/Jitter/Live Salons will continue in a collaborative event with the Bay Area Computer Music Technology Group, hosted by the Gray Area Foundation for the Arts. This will be an evening of informal lectures and performances: a brainwave system for the creation of music presented by Jef Stott; Edison making music with Max, Monomes, Live and low-bit samplers; Preshish Moments detailing and performing with his custom hardware controller and Max/MSP system for manipulating audio.

This salon is hosted by Overlap.org and Sound Arts and mediated by Barry Threw. It is encouraged to bring patches, questions, and ideas. We are excited that Ableton Live is now a part of the Overlap Salon, and we are the new Ableton Live user group of San Francisco !

The salon will begin with a short introduction by all participants, and followed by a quick presentation. The remainder of the time will be spent collectively working and thinking about “the project of the day”. Everyone is welcome regardless of experience using Max/MSP/Jitter or Ableton Live.

Max/MSP/Jitter and Ableton Live patches covered in the Salon will also be shared on Overlap.org following the event. All participants are encouraged to bring their own laptop, and libations. WIFI provided.

Our salons are a mix of presentations and ad-hoc discussion, dependent upon what kinds of ideas and issues are brought to the table. Everyone is welcome regardless of previous experience, and we will try to cater to all skill levels. We also drink beer.

Overlap + swissnex + You collab at QB1 Robot premiere

Overlap is pleased to announce a new collaboration with swissnex San Francisco and YOU.

On April 24th swissnex is unveiling the QB1, a robot that alters the fundamentals of human-machine interaction. To celebrate the occasion, and kick-off a new relationship with swissnex, I will be dj’ing two short sets, and the Overlap.org max/msp freaks (= me, louis, barry) will be unveiling our own generative system of music. The goal is to fill the event space with beautiful ambient sounds via systems of constrained indeterminacy. This system will process and morph and resynthesize MIDI files that are submitted to Overlap.org by YOU (yay!).

If you’d like to submit, here are the guidelines for Overlap Music Bot submissions:

1. All MIDI files must be in the key of Amaj, D#maj, or F#minor.
2. Submission must be made through overlap.org. > sign-in and make a post with a link to your MIDI file(s).
3. No limit to the # of files you wish to submit.
4. Credits to all artists involved will be announced at the event and follow-up posts about the QB1 event (more below).

Overlap Presents : Miroque – Live at Sound Arts – March 15, 2009

Overlap.org is happy to present a very special live performance and recording at Sound Arts with Miroque.

Miroque is visiting from Japan, and we are very excited to try a new kind of Overlap.org event with her.

The two-hour event will be an intimate showcase and recording session of Miroques gentle and haunting music.
